Definition

The development and expansion of language and specialized vocabulary involves exploring new vocabulary in context and developing the ability to use it to communicate thinking and learning.

Why Use it?/ What This Skill Develops...

Using appropriate vocabulary is a fundamental literacy skill that allows students to communicate their thinking about their observations. Explorations and investigations provide students the opportunity to expand their language and specialized vocabulary by exposing them to new experiences, tools, and materials. The development and expansion of language and specialized vocabulary is interconnected with skills such as predicting, observing, describing, discussing, explaining, reflecting, making connections, and reporting/presenting.

Students

  • Develop and use specialized vocabulary associated with their explorations.
  • Develop and use appropriate vocabulary to describe their observations.
  • Use appropriate language and specialized vocabulary to connect new experiences with what they already know.
  • Use appropriate language and specialized vocabulary to communicate their ideas and findings within relevant contexts.

Teachers

  • Provide opportunities for students to develop and use vocabulary, including specialized vocabulary, within given contexts.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop and use appropriate vocabulary, using observations through their senses.
  • Provide multiple opportunities for students to connect new words and specialized vocabulary to prior knowledge and to practice using this vocabulary.
  • Provide various opportunities for students to use new words and specialized vocabulary in meaningful contexts to communicate their thinking and ideas.
